About the Program
The Reaching for Extraordinary (R4E) program annually assembles cross-divisional committees, serving as centers of innovation where staff are encouraged to brainstorm and develop initiatives that advance SFO’s 5-Year Strategic Plan goals. The program derives its name from SFO’s vision statement, “Inspiring the Extraordinary". At SFO, “extraordinary” is a future where we set new standards and achieve bold new heights—not just for our benefit but to inspire change across the industry and improve the world. The R4E program embodies this spirit of innovation by intentionally creating spaces for staff to collaborate, drive innovation, develop professionally, and advance organizational performance.
Established in 2010 and recently renamed to reflect our new vision, the R4E program is a cornerstone of SFO’s culture, breaking down silos and turning ambitious ideas into reality. The program has given rise to projects like the SkyTerrace, a public open-air observation deck atop Terminal 2; the SFO Unites Against Hunger program, providing tenants with an easy way to donate excess food, resulting in 11,000 meals donated annually to Safe Harbor; free tax preparation services in the Business & Career Center for workers; and the implementation of an airfield congestion tool that uses real-time data to ease taxiway congestion. Each year, the R4E committees are reassembled, inviting staff from all levels, divisions, and diverse backgrounds to contribute to SFO’s strategic goals while supporting their professional development. Although each committee is aligned with a strategic goal, the committee members determine objectives and initiatives to pursue with guidance from a Senior Staff member. The committees have access to a moderate budget to support development costs for initiatives and proposals. This approach fosters creativity, collaboration, and mentorship, allowing ideas from all corners of the airport to thrive, and enhancing our teamwork environment.

The 2025 Committees are described in the table below, featuring the names of the Senior Staff sponsors and Committee Leads who will oversee the work. These committees will kick off in February 2025 and wrap up in December 2025, making this program an 11-month professional development experience. MVP and Team SFO are open for new member enrollment year-round. If you're interested in joining, please reach out to Corina Monzón at corina.monzon@flysfo.com.
