Ways SFO is already operating sustainably:

  • Outlining a suite of measures to achieve zero waste by 2021 as published in the Airport’s first Zero Waste Plan.
  • Buying 100% greenhouse gas-free electricity from San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC).
  • Using advanced building control systems to minimize energy needed for heating & cooling while maximizing comfort – like the Consolidated Admin Campus’ innovative radiant heating ceiling panels.
  • Ensuring that water conservation, recycling & composting, and energy-efficient lighting are standard features in all areas of the Airport and all offices.
  • Using drought-tolerant native plants for landscaping.
  • Using high-performance outdoor air filtration systems to clean the outdoor air and provide healthier indoor spaces in new buildings.
  • Using building materials, products and furniture that provide improved impact on planetary and human health.
  • Maintaining and cleaning Airport facilities with green cleaning products.

Ways you can help:

Airport-wide:  If you notice leaks, spills, and trash, call Custodial at 650.821.3969 or Maintenance at 650.821.5700, 24-hours-a-day.

At the workstation:

  • Save energy by powering down your computer and monitor outside your working hours, and adjusting your settings to sleep mode when you’re away from the desk.
  • Use natural lighting whenever possible, and turn ceiling lights off to reduce electricity use.
  • Unplug unnecessary appliances and equipment.
  • Use a reusable water bottle.
  • Recycle unneeded paper documents or reuse them as scratch paper.

In the breakroom:

  • Use reusable silverware, plates, cups, etc. whenever possible.  Bring your food in reusable containers.
  • Compost food scraps, paper products with food or grease on them, and compostable utensils and cups.
  • Turn off the water while washing dishes; use it for when they need to be rinsed.  Let dishes dry in a drying rack, or use a clean, reusable cloth towel instead of a paper towel.

In the restroom:

  • Use the air hand dryer in place of paper towels whenever possible.  This not only saves a tree but also avoids the emissions needed to produce and ship paper towels.

In the terminals:

  • When ordering food to-go, request only the necessary packaging .  Say no to single-use disposable plastics, and shop SFO’s certified Green Businesses (find a full list here: https://www.flysfo.com/green-businesses).
  • See a trash/recycling/compost bin with confusing or mislabeled signage?  Report it to Environmental Operations at 650.821.8380.
