CCSF Start Date:  June 16, 2008

What is your education and/or work experience? I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on hydraulics and hydrology and a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on Transportation Engineering and Computer Science. I have 18 years of airport planning experience most of which were gained while working at two national airport management consulting firms.

Who are your direct reports? Bert Ganoung, the Aircraft Noise Abatement Office manager as well as the staff of the Airport Planning Section including John Kim, Vishal Trivedi, Avant Ramsey, Rebecca Birrer, and Joanna Au.

What is your section responsible for? BPEA guides facility development to ensure that air passenger, air cargo, airline, and airport support facilities are developed in response to demand and consistent with the Airport’s goals of maximizing efficient use of airside and landside resources, maintaining competitive airline rates and charges, and enhancing the total customer experience. BPEA also directs the Airport’s environmental planning and permitting initiatives, ensuring that the Airport’s environmental impacts are appropriately assessed and associated mitigation programs are implemented, and monitoring local land use developments in neighboring communities to ensure land use compatibility with Airport operations. Finally, BPEA coordinates with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the airlines, the general public, and other stakeholders to address concerns about aircraft noise and over flights through an “open-door” policy.

What is your favorite thing about SFO? My favorite thing about SFO is the working environment that has been established here that is open to change and good ideas, no matter where they originate.

What is your favorite thing about San Francisco? There are so many things to like about San Francisco and the Bay area (the people, the culture, the food…) it’s hard to choose of only one favorite. However, as someone who grew up in an area with bitter cold winters and sweltering hot summers, I guess my favorite thing is the (mostly) mild weather that encourages year round outdoor activity.

Where is your favorite place for vacation? I don’t really have a favorite location and try to mix it up each year; just about anywhere in California is great for a mini-vacation.

What are your favorite hobbies or sports? I am an avid video game fan and especially enjoy massively multiplayer online role playing games. I’m currently playing World of Warcraft and am looking forward to the release of Star Wars the Old Republic Online.

What book are you currently reading? For a work refresher I’m reading ACRP report 38, “Understanding Airspace, Objects, and Their Effects on Airports”, for fun, I’m reading Star Wars Fatal Alliance.

Anything else you’d like to add? I have been impressed with all of the changes that have taken place at SFO since I started 3 years ago especially the Reaching for Number 1 strategic and organizational initiatives. I look forward to seeing more of these initiatives implemented as they get incorporated into the performance plans for coming years and can’t wait to see the positive changes these initiatives will bring to SFO and my fellow employees.
