Plane Spotting, July 2016: Boeing 777

Featured Aircraft for July 2016:  The Boeing 777

The Boeing 777 is a family of long-range, wide-body twin-engine jet airliners developed and manufactured by Boeing Commercial Airplanes.  It is the world's largest twinjet and has a typical seating capacity for 314 to 550 passengers, with a range of 5,200 to 9,500 nautical miles. Commonly referred to as the "Triple Seven", its distinguishing features include the largest-diameter turbofan engines of any aircraft, six wheels on each main landing gear, fully circular fuselage cross-section, and a blade-shaped tail cone. It was the first commercial aircraft to be designed entirely with computer-aided design.

Key Identifying Features:

landing gear

One key identifying feature of the Boeing 777 family is the six wheel main landing gear.  Other Boeing aircraft have a four wheel main gear.

blade cone

Another key feature is the blade-shaped tail cone of the aircraft.  It is not conical as most aircraft are, but squared and vertically narrow.

wing tip

Another differentiating feature applies to the Boeing 777-300 series - the raked wingtips versus squared off wingtips.
