“Working at SFO” Event Engages Local Educators and Community Partners

Airport welcomes Bay Area school district officials, high school principals, college professors for insight into career opportunities at SFO.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO), in partnership with the Bay Area Council’s “Workforce of the Future” initiative, announced plans to host local educators and community partners to showcase career opportunities at the Airport.  The event, to be held on January 18, 2018, is titled “Working at SFO”, and features an overview of airport facilities, and a career expo including airlines, airport employers, and small business owners at SFO.  The goal of the event is to inform local educators and community partners about the diverse career pathways are available at SFO, and how to access these opportunities for students and youth participants.  SFO will hold a similar event in Spring 2018 for students and youth to showcase the workforce pipelines available at an airport.

“Our goal is to be an exceptional Airport, in service to our communities,” said Airport Director Ivar C. Satero.  “Through our Economic and Community Development team, we’re engaging educators and leaders in our region more than ever before, to highlight the wide variety of career opportunities that exist at SFO.  We’re proud to host this event, and hope that it provides valuable insights to participants.”

Attendees expected at the event include the following:

  • Unified School District official from San Francisco, Oakland, and San Mateo
  • High school principals and teachers from five Bay Area counties
  • Representative from local community colleges, including Sector Navigators, charged with aligning workforce training and career pathways for students across the state
  • College professors covering all subjects, including Hospitality, Culinary, Tourism, Building, Construction and Trades, and Science and Engineering
  • Job developers, career counselors, and community-based partners for many populations, including students, at-risk youth, and veterans, youth with disabilities, foster youth 
  • City partners including Department of Public Health, SFPD, Public Utilities Commission, SF Juvenile probation department, Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce development staff

SFO’s Economic and Community Development group works to create and enhance partnerships that meet the intersecting workforce development needs of the Airport's communities, including, but not limited to, the City and County of San Francisco, neighboring cities and counties, the educational community, community-based organizations and private businesses.

The Airport’s Business & Employment Center provides sourcing services to over 100 Airport tenants, plans and executes large and small scale hiring events, and provides career guidance and direct placement services to more than 1,000 youth and adult job seekers annually.

For more than 25 years, SFO has hired college students and participated in internship programs offered by the City and County of San Francisco.  Airport-specific programs began with the creation of the Employment and Community Partnerships department in 1997, with the goal of forging lasting connections between local communities and ongoing career placement at SFO.  On its 20th anniversary, the Airport welcomed a record 153 interns for the summer of 2017, covering high school students, transitional age youth, college students, and trades.

In its most recent economic impact report, SFO directly accounted for over 42,800 jobs at the Airport.
